A film on the life of the much-mythologised 16th-century Irish pirate Grace O’Malley is set to enter production next year.
The film’s script will be based on the book Grace O’Malley: The Biography of Ireland’s Pirate Queen, 1530-1603 by biographer Anne Chambers and is to be directed by the Academy Award-nominated Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan, whose past films include In America and Disco Pigs.
The film will explore O’Malley’s life and adventures whilst examining the gender norms and expectations of women in the era. The film will be co-produced by Irish studio Wild Atlantic Pictures (The Green Knight, Evil Dead Rise, Cocaine Bear, The Hole in the Ground) and the Brazilian/American start-up Reclaim Entertainment Ventures.
