Larger than life German director Werner Herzog returns to familiar territory with Rescue Dawn, a dramatisation of a true story that he had turned into a documentary ten years earlier, Little Dieter Wants to Fly. It told the remarkable story of Dieter Dengler, a German born American whose burning passion for flying led him into the US airforce, and then the Vietnam War. Dengler (played by the excellent Christian Bale) is shot down in the jungle, captured, and taken prisoner. After years of torture and malnourishment he escapes his captors only to have to deal with the dangers of an even more hostile jungle.
