The Bad Daters & The Good Cheaters are written and directed by New York-based Derek Murphy, originally from Ballyfermot. Both shows feature comedian Brian Gallagher, resident MC of Dublin’s Laughter Lounge, and actress Sarah Maria Lafferty. The Bad Daters recently had its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it received five-star critical acclaim and a sold-out run.
Lafferty, a Dublin-based actor and producer, began her work on both shows when introduced to Derek Murphy in 2016 during a theatre workshop in New York.
“Both shows, The Bad Daters and The Good Cheaters, are captivating dark Irish comedies that deeply resonate with audiences,” explains Lafferty. “In The Bad Daters, we are introduced to Liam and Wendy, who have met online. The dark comedy delves into the complexities of human connection and the daunting experience of seeking love for individuals scarred by past relationships. On the contrary, The Good Cheaters follows the journey of Paddy and Phyllis as they navigate the treacherous waters of adultery within their own relationship. They are a perfect blend of hilarity and tragedy, courtesy of the talented writer, Derek Murphy”.
Lafferty’s co-star Brian Gallagher is well known as the resident MC at Dublin’s Laughter Lounge and a rising star in the Irish comedy circuit, previously opening for Tommy Tiernan at Vicar Street.
“Irish audiences are in for a treat”, explained Gallagher. “We were absolutely amazed by the overwhelming response to The Bad Daters at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, receiving outstanding 4 and 5-star reviews from all corners. Now, at The Viking, we are thrilled to present an even more epic night of dark comedy-drama with the inclusion of The Good Cheaters. While modern technology may facilitate faster connections, it cannot replace the authenticity and personal touch that define genuine relationships.”
The Bad Daters & The Good Cheaters run at The Viking Theatre, The Sheds, 198 Clontarf Road from 8th-20th April. Tickets are priced from €20.
