Hot off the back of a breathtaking appearance at last weekend’s Electric Picnic, singer and multi-disciplinary artist Deirdre Murphy takes to the stage at the Cobblestone this Saturday September 10th to launch her new album, Matriotism.
The name of the album is inspired by the concept of devotion to the motherland; to the earth, with some of the dark tones on the album reflecting the dark turn of health which the planet is currently undergoing. Other songs reinforce the paradox that, even in the midst of collapse, beauty and wonder are all around us.
The Alaskan native’s songs have been compared to Ali Farka Toure in their sparingness, combining a peaceful dream like quality with a sharper edge of darkness and sometimes menace, infused with lyrical influences referencing Leonard Cohen and The White Stripes.
Deirdre will be joined by a host of musicians including Denis McAuliffe, Claire Fitch, Jason McNamara, Lily Sheehan, Becky Reilly, Rita Garland and Kiruu for what promises to be a very special evening of music and performance.
