Hillary Woods

Hilary Woods- Night

Thu 18 – Sat 20 September | Smock Alley Theatre | €13, 8pm

Hilary Woods is no stranger to the Irish music scene. Having got a taste of the success while still a teenager in jj72, Woods stepped back from the limelight to focus on other artistic endeavours, studying painting, literature and film-making. Following the success of her debut EP last year under her nom de guerre The River Cry, Hilary is back, this time under her given name, and with a show inspired by experience in other fields and crafted with the the multi-disciplinary ethos of the fringe in mind. Night is not only the launch for Woods’ new LP of the same name but also an immersive, visceral experience pairing Woods’ yearning dream pop with hypnotic visuals of the artist’s own imaging and promises to make great use of the uniquely warm yet strangely industrial surrounds of the Smock Alley Boy’s School. These series of Fringe shows are poised to be a very special coming-out party for an emerging artist who is dead set on making us reconsider our pre-conceptions about the “Irish singer-songwriter” set.

For the last few years Cloud Castle Lake have been almost starting to seem like some sort of urban legend, popping up every now and then to blow people’s socks of with a phenomenal live show only to disappear for months at a time without a trace. Well, the wait is over and after much tweaking, reflection and boundless patience the fruits of the CCL boy’s labors, the Dandelion EP (about which we chatted to the boys in detail this month) is finally being released into the big bad world. With lead single Sync having already recieved glowing reviews from the likes of Pitchfork and Stereogum and a genuine air of anticipation surrounding the launch in Whelans this one is really taking on the shade of a “I was there” sort of proposition. Not to be missed. Support on the night comes from the hotly tipped Maria Somerville.
