Roadmap: Pucker Up – Valentine’s Threefer + The Singles Club

Posted February 11, 2014 in More

February represents a time to ruminate on failed dry-Januarys or experience the anxiety that comes with Valentine’s Day gifts or lack thereof.

If you want to give a thoughtful gift with the least amount of reflection necessary then leave the hard work up to Designist. Their ‘Le Box of Love’ in association with Le Cool is returning this year with a mystery hamper of goodies for your significant other. Presents last year included cocktail vouchers, swanky chocolates and designer jewellery all for a very cool €30.

If you’re looking to continue in the vein of self-improvement for the month of February look no further than the wonderful Block T. Skillsets is a series of evening and weekend courses that are affordable and useful, featuring everything from creative drawing and screenwriting to more technical options like projection mapping and After Effects. You can opt for a variety of time frames from 6 weeks to just one day of intensive upskilling. Email skillsets@blockt.ie for more information.

If all that dieting and intensive exercise has left you baying for a glass of wine and a steak then February is the perfect time to go out for a bite to eat in the city. The biannual ‘Dine in Dublin‘ week will run from February 24th to March 2nd and will give you the opportunity to eat at some of our best restaurants without a price tag that leaves you feeling faint. Coupled with events like wine-tastings and belly-dancing events this is the perfect way blow away your January blues.

Killer Sandwich

A Killer Sandwich is the brainchild of Mr. & Mrs. Stevens, a couple of brand creatives who sought to marry their love of cooking with some real-world examples of how a Twitter based brand can thrive both on the web and off. A Killer Sandwich tweets out the sandwich of the week on a Wednesday along with price and pick-up location. 140 characters and two days later a horde of followers arrive to pick up their goods and get a freshly made sandwich while interacting with other internet bap-lovers. With dublin’s artisan bakers as suppliers and produce yard-smoked and cured in the Killer Sandwich residence this is an escape from the limp, fridge-dwelling sandwiches of your local cornershop.

Singles Club

Girl Band – Lawman 7”

Released on a run of 300 copies in hand-printed and hand-sewn sleeves, Lawman is a devastating slice of dirty rock music, built on a hammering, metronomic beat and brutal metallic scrapes of guitar and bass. Girl Band’s France 98 EP let us know all about their power, but Lawman is another couple of steps up the ladder and has been getting rave reviews from all quarters including Pitchfork, Noisey, FACT and anyone else with ears.

James Wolf – Heart + Soul

James Wolf, previously known as Bitches With Wolves, is back with a new single out on February 10 called Heart + Soul. It’s in the same vein as BWW – camp synth pop that can be transformed into a dancefloor belter if necessary – as is show by the Azari & III remix which is winning rave reviews from all and sundry. A future Mother classic?

TVVINS – You Better

Taking the whole CHVRCHES spelling thing to it’s logical extension, TVVINS features Conor Adams (from Cast Of Cheers) and Lar Kaye (Adebisi Shank and No Spill Blood) who are trading in their guitars for turntables – or at least laptops – to create a side project that is many miles from their respective dayjobs, eschewing fiddly fretwork for anthemic, Postal Service-y style electronic. Debut You Better is accompanied by a Whelans gig on Thursday 27th February.
