To Travel For: Dillisk

Katie Sanderson has taken her Living Dinners (www.livingdinners.com) ethos from the city to the coast with her move to a converted boat shed on the machair of Aughrusbeg in Connemara, Co Galway to open Dillisk, described as a “seaside food project”. Open three nights a week until September, the Dillisk team will serve a tasting menu of the best local produce they can find that day. Expect seaweed, pickles and fish fresh off the boat from nearby Cleggan Harbour. Find out all about the project and book your tickets at www.dillisk.com

While You’re In The West: The Great Connemara Foodie Adventure

Mungo Murphy’s Seaweed Co. is based in Barna, County Galway. Seaweed enthusiast Sinead O’Brien was trying to write a story when out came the persona of Mungo Murphy; a swarthy fisherman and seaweed gatherer with a tailless cat called Parnell. It’s in his name that O’Brien collects, dries and packages seaweed with the help of business partners Kevin Moore Murphy and Cindy O’Brien.

The team set up a trail in Connemara to show visitors three different local food producers. The Great Connemara Foodie Adventure starts at Connemara Abalone in Rossaveal to see their abalone and sea urchins being grown. After lunch, Carrane brewery is the next stop for a beer and cheese tasting and finally Uncle Matt’s Farm in Oughterard is the supper stop with the farm’s speciality lettuce and potatoes (and other vegetables) served up for hungry tour groups.

You can find out more about this tour and the other tours that Mungo leads at www.mungomurphyseaweed.com. And if you fancy a bit of The West delivered to your door, you can order bags of coastal delights like Carrageen Moss, sea spaghetti and abalone from their website too.

To Covet: Irish Beech Egg Cups

We’re pretty obsessed with these geometric egg cups made with Irish beech by The Saturday Workshop. A father and daughter enterprise, The Saturday Workshop started when architecture graduate Iseult and her structural engineer father Edward decided to use their Saturdays to work on timber design projects together. Find out more about their amazing woodwork at www.saturdayworkshop.ie and pop into The Irish Design Shop on Drury Street or find more info at www.saturdayworkshop.ie.

To Read: Vegetable Literacy

In the summer months, we find ourselves adopting a pseudo vegetarian diet to make full use of the delicious bounty of summer. One of America’s most trusted authorities on vegetarianism has released a new cookbook just in time. Her latest cookbook Vegetable Literacy is packed with inspiration for garden cooking and aims to highlight the links between vegetables, edible flowers and herbs in order to arm the cook with a deeper botanical knowledge. To Visit: News of The Curd’s Monthly Suppers

One of our favourite weekly supper clubs has become a monthly affair. Kevin Powell and his girlfriend Robin have been hosting the News of the Curd supper club in their Temple Bar apartment every Wednesday since 2012. As of June, they’ll be hosting three dinners a month over the last Thursday, Friday and Saturday of every month. Instead of three courses, there’ll be seven to nine courses but the dedication to highlighting great Irish produce will remain the same. Find out more about the new dinners at newsofthecurd.com.
