Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Director: Jake Szymanski

Talent: Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza

Mike and Dave (Efron and Devine) are brothers whose wild party antics have ruined one family gathering too many, so for their sister’s wedding their exasperated parents demand they bring along nice, respectable dates, the idea being that the girls will somehow keep them out of trouble. The boys place an ad on Craigslist which quickly goes viral, attracting the attention of Tatiana and Alice (Plaza and Kendrick), two heavy-drinking waitresses who decide to pass themselves off as a couple of angels in order to get a free trip to Hawaii.

Although the premise — a spin on the usual dynamics of the Hollywood sex comedy, with the female characters for once allowed to be every bit as awful and gross-out as their male counterparts — has some real potential, the resulting film, unfortunately, is just not very good. Few of the jokes land with anything more than a perfunctory chuckle, the script goes to disappointingly predictable places, and while the talented cast certainly give it their best shot, the material simply does not reward their efforts. A missed opportunity.
